The land RWE remains the laggard in climate protection

In Germany, North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) is the energy land No.1. It therefore has a special responsibility for climate protection. A third of all CO2 emissions related to the energy in Germany and about 45% of the emissions of greenhouse gases, covered by the emissions trading scheme, come from North Rhine-Westphalia. In this way it makes the main share of the contribution to climate change in Germany. The energy sector contributes the the largest part: about 55% of annual greenhouse gas emissions come from RWE and the three other main providers of electricity in Germany.

NRW – coal country

With a share of 75% (2012), coal is the most important energy source used in North Rhine-Westphalia to produce electricity, and therefore primarily responsible for high emissions of CO2 in comparison to the national scale. According to the balance of sources, adjusted for temperature, in 2004 alone lignite was responsible for the emission of 96.2 million tons of carbon dioxide. Meanwhile, CO2 emissions related to lignite amount to just under 100 million tonnes per year (1990: 87.7 million t/y).

About 86 million tonnes of CO2 per year (2013) are produced only by the four RWE lignite power plants in Frimmersdorf, Neurath, Niederaussem and Weisweiler. That’s over half of all carbon dioxide emissions related to energy in NRW. The Neurath power plant, which produces 33.3 million tonnes of CO2 per year, now is the No. 1 enemy of the climate in Germany. The emissions from power the plants and factories Fortuna North, Ville / Berrenrath and Frechen are not yet includeded.

Those who are serious about climate protection, must therefore first and foremost reduce the share of lignite to the production of electricity. Right now there is a chance for a lasting switching position – leaving lignite, towards efficient and environmentally friendly energy structures. The whole power industry is completely obsolete and should be replaced by environmentally friendly and effective technologies. The lignite power plants are connected to the grid already since the mid 60s and this with an effectiveness of 30%. We can justifiably call them dinosaurs in the world of energy. But even the lignite power plants, which are called modern, are intolerable from the point of view of climate policy, because RWE uses higher effectiveness to produce more electricity, keeping the use of coal constant on the long term. Thus the carbon footprint remains devastating.s

Germany carbonises Europe

The German coal power plants are the most harmful to the climate in Europe. This is the result of a new study conducted by the german section of the WWF, World Wide Fund for Nature (wwf.de/2014/juli/deutschland-verkohlt-europa/) at 30 European plants that produced the largest quantities of CO2 in 2013. To the top five elong four German lignite power plants: the Neurath and Niederaussem plants in the energy company RWE in the Rhineland occupy numbers 2 and 3, 4 and 5 are hold by Boxberg and Jänschwalde, both operated by Vattenfall. The negative is the leader in Europe Belchatow power plant in Poland.
