„Tripod“ Live-In Barricade Repression Resistance Action

On September 19th at 8 o’clock in the morning approx 100 cops entered the millenarian Hambacher Forest, occupied for last six years blocking the expansion of RWE’s open cast lignite mine, to remove the “The Tripod”, a live-in barricade. The official state line was that it was to keep the roads open for emergency vehicles in case of accident occurring in the forest. The emergency vehicles are the harvesters, bulldozers and loaders of this years cutting season which will begin on Oct. 25 and the “accident” is the global climate chaos, millions of premature deaths a year, and irreplaceable habitat loss to which Hambacher (cynically named after the forest its destroying) Mine: single largest net CO2 emitter in Europe, is not an innocent bystander to but rather a culprit extending its effect through emission and pollutants and through RWE Global Power Conglomerate machine impacting and destroying communities and ecosystem from Colombia, England and Germany to Siberia.
When the police entered the forest they at first surrounded the Tripod to prevent supporters joining in the two blockaders, one of whom was locked on the ground to a concrete lock-on and the second who was in the top of the tripod which in its mid level included a platform with a tent. Through walkway from a neighbouring tree additional person was still able to join those on the inside. For the next 5 hours the cops massed up around the barricade as large bulldozers removed the barricades leading into the heart of the forest(each year a 500 meter swath which is cut to enlarge the mine) followed by back loaders loading the scrap metal and tarps which comprises left over material from the ocupation and performing a function of trash removal for the struggle. The barricade clearing was also immediately followed by peeps emerging from the forest and rebuilding the barricades behind the heavy equipment often with cops still in sight. During this time the forest resonated with animal calls and music from the approx. 40 forest defenders. As forest roads turned into parking lots for long lines of forces of repression paint and bottles of bitumen were thrown at the police vehicles. Pigs responded with snatch attacks at the people singing and playing drums in solidarity around the Tripod. All together 5 people were grabbed and later released.

By 1 oclock cops begun to cut the barbed wire connecting the wood stocked around the ground level of the Tripod and got to the forest activist locked on under the table of Tripod’s kitchen. For over 2 hours they went at it with their power tools. And as concrete cutting tools echoed in the forest, climbing cops started to get on to the tree with the walkway ropes attempting to cut the lines and cut off the activist who descended into the tripod and was doing support to the people inside. Lower branches were being cut off and ladders attached to the tree giving enough time to make it back across and into the crown of the tree where the two climbing cops followed. Holding out for over an hour in the thin top branches the two climbing cops a meter and a half below attempted to convince the climber that they were just concerned with the person safety and that the activist needed to be removed before proceeding to the tripod. Eventually they gave up and descended from the tree to the tripod where for over an hour they tugged, pulled and then stepped on the tripod defender and later had a hard time removing him as he lay limp in the fork of the tripod. Once on the ground popo attempted to use pain compliance bullshit to try to get him to walk but that did not work either and he was dragged and then carried to the cop car.
Overall this has been one of the longest road barricade evictions with over 9 hours of struggle and when the cops left the forest the barricade building and food sharing resumed in full.

This year especially is an important time for the Defense of the Hambacher Forest as the new wave of deforestation is about to ensue during this winters cutting season and as another Direct Action Skillshare Camp will take place in the forest from Semptember 25th to Oct1. October 1st would have been the official start of this years cutting season which has just been postponed to October 25 as RWE is forced to appear in Administrative Court in Cologne on October 17 by a law suit initiated by Bund fur Natur as a response to the company’s lack of enviromental assesment studies, its lack of studies of costs of post extraction clean up and last but definitevely not least: two colonies of endangered bats being discovered in this year’s cutting zone. In November COPP summit will also take place in Bonn which is in the middle of North Rhine Westfalia coal region. That in itself is not an accident as the coal industry is heavily coopting the negotiations and framing coal as a transition energy source. Next COPP is also scheduled to take place in Katowice, Poland the centre of the Silesian Coal Mining Region.

Climate Justice Struggle in Hambacher Forest and in countless other locations around the world is a response to the Neo-Liberal Extractionist Agenda of Disaster Capitalism and a call to preserve every community every organism being paramount to protecting Planet as a whole.

A compensation of 1 million for all 8,000 RWE employees …

german

We received this e-mail:

„… and then in two years: the end of the Rhenish lignite mining.

1,000,000 compensation per employee × 8,000 employees = 8,000,000 × 1,000 = 8,000,000,000 = 8 billion euros compensation for all 8,000 employees in total = profit of RWE Power AG from the lignite in the next 2 years.

The profit from the lignite in the amount of EUR 8 billion required for this measure is still below the profit of EUR 8.5798 billion (= EUR 4.2899 billion x 2 years), which RWE actually is going to achieve in the next 2 years from the lignite. See our previous article: 116 billion € profit from the lignite ….

In no case in North Rhine-Westphalia “the lights will go out” go out after these 2 years! According to the latest figures published by the Energy Agency of the state of NRW, 178.8 Terrawatt hours of electricity are generated per year in NRW, but only 138.8 Terrawatt hours per year are consumed, corresponding to an overproduction of electricity in NRW in the amount of 40.0 Terrawatt hours per year. From the Hambach lignite estimated approximately 18.5 Terrawatt hours of electricity per year, from the Garzweiler lignite roughly estimated perhaps 18.5 Terrawatt hours of electricity. Possible flanking measures: No export of lignite electricity to France and the Netherlands nor even to outside NRW.

The electricity generated from the Hambach lignite of 18.5 Terrawatt hours of electricity was calculated quite complexly from RWE Power AG’s application for the approval of the 3rd framework plan for Hambach, as this information was missing in this application.

The reduction of 1,500 jobs announced today by RWE in the next 2 years corresponds to only 18.75% of the possible reduction of 8,000 jobs in the next two years against a compensation of one million euros per employee.

Deep Ecology AFternoon in Gallien, Saturday 2PM

Join us for a meal and get involved in liberating small samplings of beeches, oaks, maples and aspens from the frontline where this winter again we can expect hundreds of riots cops and RWE harvesters and bulldozers attempting to make sure that biodiversity that survived for over last 12,000 years will be eliminated. Trees are a keystone species on which countless other organisms depend so this action gives a chance for some of this biodiversity to be preserved. Started this spring tens of trees from Hambi have been planted at public, collective and individual spaces all across Europe. These trees are a silent testimonial to the extinction of the Hambacher Forest habitats and with small info boards informing of where they have come from they patiently await for their seeds to grow through the cracks of concrete and asphalt that surround them at the moment.

During this Deep Ecology Get Together aditional bird habitats will also be made out of zero waste items such as mid size containers. There will also be discussion of species and biodiversity present in the Hambacher Forest followed by Hambacher Forest Tshirt printing. Join us and tell your friends.

The additional items that could be of use that you could contribute to this project would be small buckets, shovels, and large hiking boots and rubber boots as well as large cooking oil containers and small beer cegs for the bird habitats. Feel free to also bring extra shirts, jackets on which you will be able to print some cool Hambi art.

This is also an ongoing project so if you can not make it tomorrow but are still interested in participating in propagating some of endangered trees and even seeds please get in touch with fnord.andromeda at riseup.net.

116 billion € profit from the lignite …

We received the e-mail below.
Let’s remember: On 1 December 2015, RWE announced that it would reorganize the Group. It was foreseeable that electricity generation from coal would end. So it was bundled in its own business area: RWE Power AG.
When we compare the parent company, the RWE Group, to a farmer, RWE Power AG is a dairy cow which once gave a lot of milk and is now to be vigorously milked till it drops down dead. Then others may care of the disposal of the emaciated carcass: The workers who lose their jobs without sufficient replacement in time, the villages “on the rim”, with a poisonous dust hole in front of their noses (where its too steep embankments in an area endangered by earthquakes and increasing sudden rainfall form a problem for themselves), thousands of resettled in their soulless new villages, the taxpayers, the world climate and so on.

Please read in this post, how this milking to death works: (more…)

Court Suit against RWE postpons beginning of cutting season to October 25th

A suit filed in the Cologne Administrative court by BUND NRW, a local chapter of Friends of the Earth, has resulted in RWE postponing its planned begining of the cutting season from October 1st to October 25th. This court case addresses the lack of environmental assesments, disregard of Flora and Fauna directives and brings attention to two colonies of endangered Bechstein’s bat that are located in the area of the Hambach Forest that is to be cut this winter. These two habitats contain 30-35 females each and are brooding places for their young as well. The suit also addresses the endangered biodiversity of the oak and beach stands that are to be cut and which have stood there since the end of the last ice age 12,000 years ago and represent one of the last natural outposts of this type in the region.

A court hearing concerning the legal aspects of the future of the forest will take place in Cologne on October 17 Verwaltungs-Gericht (Administrative Court) in Cologne, Hall 160 at 10:30 clock. Make a note in your calendar if you are in the area.

Another area in which you could assist even remotely in blocking RWE with its plans to destroy the forest is by contacting as many naturalists, botanists, entomologists, ornithologists, etc at your local university, environmental or naturalist group and directing their attention to the struggle to save the Hambacher Forest. A parallel effort of this type has taken place in the ZAD the Notre Dame and in Bialowieza forest making them some of the most studied and documented natural areas in Europe. Hambach Forest is in the desperate need of similar grass-roots, non institutional studies to be used as an expanded activist tool set together with direct actions. Both approaches do not require professionalism or any academic training but interest and motivation only.

More info on the suit can be found on BUNDS website at

1.5 Ton of Food Arrives in the Meadow

Today a bus with a trailer dropped one and a half ton of food in the meadow occupation. It has been container by a single man and brought by a friendly collective. Most of the food immediately was squirrelled away into different tree houses, trailers and homes. It as well as hundreds of kilos of dry food remaining will be a very needed morale booster in the time leading into the cutting season that will start at the beginning of next month (October).

Big Thanks for people collecting and delivering the food supplies as well as providing many other forms of support.

Blockade forces trucks to leave lumber in the forest, priest responds with fabrication of assault

Clergy Decapitators
The ancient Białowieża Forest continues to be logged at times late into the night and from early hours of the morning by more than 3 harvesters capable of downing more than 500 trees a day.
However following a week long intermission the anti logging resistance strikes again. When the trucks loading lumber which is presently spread through out the forest have been observed by morning patrols, over 30 activists left the Camp for the Primal Forest. After reaching the nearby location, 6 lock-on doubles, later joined by two more, locked on with metal pipes to a 18 wheeler loaded with lumber and to another one that was practically empty. The activists have locked on on top of the lumber load, on the sides and in the back and to lumber supports on the partially empty vehicle. Banners were dropped from the top, sides and front of the vehicles. Support and media group were present throwing sandwiches, books, and isomats onto the trucks and across the police lines. The drivers of the trucks climbed on top, tore off some of the banners and threatened those attempting to retrieve the material with a knife. There was a constant stream of support from the visitors to the park and locals, stopping by and expressing their gratitude and appreciation for defending this last European lowland primodial forest. A local astroturf group Santa financed by the Polish Forestry Department also made an appearance. They attempted to engage and distract the activists through ridicule, insults and threats. Their confrontational tactics were quickly dissolved when many visitors to the park attempted to communicate with this Crypto Industry, Pseudo Eco group.

Artist in Residence Call Out

Hambacher Forest is not a canvas, it is not a medium and it is defininitevely not a location for product placement and/or guerrila marketing. It is however an ecological foundation of interconectness and a spring of creativity and imagination in the spirit of resistance, solidarity and collaboration all of which like its ecosystem are under a constant assault and in a perpetual need of allies . It is in that very spirit that a call goes out to all artists, wrtiters and musicians dealing with the subject of radical ecology, repression, climate change, feminism, GLBT and animal rights issues: Join the resistance to Lignite Mining and all monocultural constructs by climbing and residing in the free treehouses and platforms, protecting this millenarian forest.
Rebel against the art establishment and join other creatives and cultural refugees who instead of being pushed to the margins have taken to the frontlines of the strugle for equality, liberation and justice. Bring and share your imagination and skills not just into the Forest, but also to the Degrowth School of Klima Camp in Rhineland(August 21st to 30th), the COPP summit in Bonn in November 3-5 and for the Hambach Skillshares Camp in the Fall.
See You in the Forest!!

Two days of blockades and actions in Primal Białowieża Forest

The logging of ancient Białowieża Forest has been blocked and equipment occupied for two days in the row now. On Thursday a group of activist locked on to the harvester and a forwarder resulting in the longest logging [longer blockades of equipment parking spots of several days have taken place] blockade of over 9 hours. Next day on Friday over 15 people locked-on in a chain and were joined by additional 30 people forming a road blockade in front of the trucks carrying over 130 year spruces out of the forest. The oppositions to this wanton destruction of the last ancient forest in Europe has recently heated up and received additional support after the European Court of Justice made a ruling calling on Polish Government and its “Environmental” Ministry to immediately seize logging of over 100 year old part of the stands of continental forest. The government in turn is now attempting to employ an arbitrary loophole by heavily cutting next to roads and claiming that it is done for safety. At the moment old growths are being cut as far as twice the height of the crown from the road. (more…)

Hambi Treeplanting Action in Wendland

Wendland Action

Several Trees from the endangered Hambacher Forest were planted as a show of solidarity with the Anti Nuclear struggle in Wendland which with its large scale actions and victories has inspired activists world over.
Two trees, a pine and a maple, were planted at homes of AntiCastor activists many of whom have settled in the area making it a vibrant epicenter of ecological activism.
Two oaks were placed in Meuchefitz at the site of Radical Herbalism Camp and a community complex hosting numerous activists and resources. https://herbalism.blackblogs.org/english/what-unites-us/ The camp i presently coming to an end however the next years camp is already being planned.

The project of replanting trees from Hambi in other locations is especially important for the symbolic few trees that can be replanted from the next 500 meter strip of the forest that is scheduled to be cut in this winter cutting season. It also underlines the importance of preserving and defending genetic diversity of trees which not only sustains a larger web of life but it also the natural defense of the forest against diseases and parasites the largest of which at the moment seems to be RWE.

Tenth Blockade of Logging Equipment in Ancient Białowieża Forest

Harvester Blockaded

Early in the morning of July 18 over 20 activists from Poland and Czech Republic converged on a logging harvester and proceeded to lock-on all around the machine with pipe lock-ons and banners. The Forestry Department guards removed all support and media from the site attempting to take away their phones to prevent their actions from being filmed and photographed. The operator of the harvester was then instructed to keep the machine running. This continued for several hours exposing the attached activists to the risk of intentional injury, with the operator of the machine warning the activists that the machine might move uncontrolably as it runs out of fuel. Yet while being separated from the media and support group and despite the noise, heat, dripping oil and the danger, the locked-on forest defenders remained there for several hours and continued to call for immediate stopping of all the logging and for biodiversity experts to inspect the logging location. The forest guards made no attempt to remove the blockaders till finally the contractor operating the harvester agreed to seize work for the day and remove the equipment from the forest. (more…)

Robber taxes of 800,000 euros: That’s how they want to liquidate the meadow and the protest camp at Hambach Forest!

deutsch | français | español

We received this letter by e-mail:

To the Prime Minister, the Minister of Justice and the Finance Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia.

Dear Sirs,

… A robbing tax of 800,000 Euros, that is the heavy artillery, put into position by the tax judges and financial officials of the state of NRW, by declaring invalid the contracts for tax consultancy by me for my father’s firm as well as my invoices, and by interpreting the delivered payments herein as donations.

They are subject to a gift tax of approximately € 800,000, for which I personally have to stand with all my assets, according to § 20 Abs. 1, Satz 2 ErbStG. The resulting enforcement affects my entire assets. This way, the meadow and the protest camp on it will be eliminated at the same time.

Complaints are pending, but at the Financial Court in Cologne fair judges are not to be expected, according to the motto: „Ist der Ruf (durch Rechtsbeugung) erst ruiniert, lebt es sich ganz ungeniert.“ Once your reputation is ruined (by your perversion of justice), you can do as you please.

If things are going on this way, in this case and at the lignite mines in general, one must not be surprised about “Hamburg conditions” in the Rhenish mining area: The authorizations for the opencast pits of Hambach and Garzweiler are all unconstitutional.

According to consistent case-law of the Federal Constitutional Court, open cast lignite mining can only be approved if it serves the common good. In the opinion of the Federal Constitutional Court, however, open cast lignite mines only serve the common good and thus are only constitutional

  • if they are “used to ensure the supply of electricity” (as a capacity reserve, for example),
  • but not, if they are used beyond this safety function, for „power supply“ in general (for example, in a 24-hours operation, like in the Rhenish area). According to the jurisprudence of the Federal Constitutional Court, this is unconstitutional.

Dear Mr. Prime Minister, I ask you for a statement and for the necessary measures in the sense of the above reasoning. The voters can not be expected to wait and to be put off until after the Bundestag election. Particularly as you personally, Mr. Prime Minister, outed yourself as a coal-friendly Prime Minister. By this statement in the last words of your maiden speech, you gave a signal in a very early stage, which is apt to raise doubts about the legal and constitutional order of your administration.

Best regards,

Kurt Claßen”
